The Keith County Highway Department is accepting applications for a position in Paxton

Applications are being accepted for a full-time operator/laborer for the Keith County Highway Department in Paxton. 

POSITION DESCRIPTION
DEPARTMENT: Roads
POSITION: Laborer/Equipment Operator 

  1. OBJECTIVES
    1. To perform all tasks necessary to maintain County roads. 
  2. RESPONSIBILITIES AND DUTIES
    1. Perform all phases of construction and maintenance on concrete, asphalt and gravel streets including but not limited to grading, patching and snow removal.
    2. Operate any and all vehicles, tools, equipment and machinery necessary for the maintenance of County roads and right of ways.
    3. Repair or replace traffic and road signs.
    4. Observe safety rules.
    5. Report equipment maintenance problems or repair equipment. 
  3. AUTHORITY AND ACCOUNTABILITY
    1. Accountable to County Roads Foreman, County Highway Superintendent, and in some cases, the CountyCommissioners.
  4. REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
    1. Knowledge of machinery and equipment to insure proper maintenance and operation of Highway Department equipment.
    2. Knowledge of concrete, asphalt and gravel work to maintain County roads.
    3. Sufficient knowledge and skill to safely and efficiently perform duties.
    4. Valid CDL drivers license.
    5. Included but not limited to these specific physical requirements:
      1. Climbing in and out of heavy equipment.
      2. Running tar applicator and shoveling sand for crack repair. (this requires being on your feet all day.)
      3. Driving heavy dump trucks in traffic. (This sometimes requires getting out of the truck and crawling on a loader and loading truck.)
      4. Operating motor graders for 10-hour shifts, snow plows for 12 or more hours, sometimes at night.
      5. Cutting trees and throwing branches in shredder.
      6. CDL health requirements.
      7. Installation of culverts, which involve heavy lifting, shoveling and tamping dirt with a pneumatic tamper.
      8. Machine maintenance. (Including lifting and installing grader bits, climbing on top and underneath of equipment, changing tires.)
      9. Ability to lift 60-65 pounds, such as calcium bags, seed, bridges and auto gates.
      10. Handling heavy barrels of paint, oil and crack oil, weighing approximately 550 pounds.
      11. Installing and replacing fences, digging postholes and pulling wire.
      12. Reside in or within close proximity of Keith County.
